  17.  In mide-June, 1989, the UNICAT Project submitted several photographs
  18.  for computer enhanced image analysis.  The photos considered fall into
  19.  two categories: i) portrait of a girl with an anomalous image above
  20.  her right shoulder; and ii) photos of an alleged UFO obtained by Mr.
  21.  Walters/Hanson of Gulf Breeze, FL starting in November, 1987.

  23.  The results have been spectacular:  the girl's photos were undoubtedly
  24.  obtained by using double exposure, thus demonstrating the photographers
  25.  familiarity with the technique, while the UFO photos show a well-defined
  26.  supporting structure under the alleged spacecraft.

  28.  The reaction of the interested parties has been swift and predictable.
  29.  Instead of addressing the main issue, i.e., why a real UFO needs to
  30.  be supported, the proponents have flooded the mails with anonymous and
  31.  world-shaking communiques which can be described only as malicious
  32.  gossiping, aimed at cushioning the negative impact of the new
  33.  information revealed by computer analysis.

  35.  The releases follow the time-honoured pattern that what counts in
  36.  politics is not the truth, but what is believed to be the truth.
  37.  In an attempt to provide a semblance of credibility, names and
  38.  circumstances are provided, but no supporting evidence is offered.
  39.  Authorship of the masterpieces of intrigue -- I am told -- have been
  40.  attributed to various sources, some of them luminaries on the UFO
  41.  scene, such as Budd Hopkins and/or his associates, or Dr. Maccabee,
  42.  or secondary characters in the play, as for instance Col. Roberrt
  43.  (sic) Reid or "Ed-of-Gulf-Breeze" himself.  Whatever the case may
  44.  be, until such times a signed copy of the statements reaches me,
  45.  I will not dignify them with a formal response.

  47.  The computer-enhanced material has not been released yet, as some
  48.  questions have been raised by the photographer regarding the
  49.  copyright protection of the photos, an issue that has been
  50.  complicated by the fact that the lawyer that initially contacted
  51.  me has indicated that she does not represent Mr. Walters any
  52.  longer.  In the meantime, information received from the Copyright
  53.  Office in Washington has created some doubts with reference to the
  54.  validity of the copyright for the specific instance, as well as
  55.  disclosing interesting possibilities based on the doctrine of
  56.  "fair use.".
